Pharmaceutical Analysis

Flow Injection is a well established tool  for automation of pharmaceutical analysis and quality control. This is well documented in several review articles ( 1-2) as well as in a specialized monograph (3). Most recently a comprehensive review has been published (5) highlighting the versatility of FIA technique for automation of standard assays based on either spectrophotometric and chemiluminiscence detection. Flow Injection is replacing manual colorimetries as well as chromatography, whenever a target analyte can selectively be detected by a reagent or by an enzymatic assay.

FIA is especially useful for kinetic assays when performed in stopped-flow mode, since reaction rate measurement can be carried out with high repeatability under well controlled reaction conditions.

Matrices analyzed range from tablets, solutions, injections and biological fluids to intermediate products and final  pharmaceuticals, ranging from acelysalicylic acid to tetracyclines or zinc thus encompassing the entire alphabet. Repetitive  assays, such as tablet dissolution studies are automated by FIA with economy and speed not attainable by chromatography.

MiroSequential Injection in LAB-ON-VALVE format advances FIA technique one step further by dramatically reducing reagent consumption and waste generation and by making the apparatus  more reliable trough the use of single syringe pump and a multiposition valve – a minimum of moving parts. The microfluidics of the LOV module are integrated with a spectrophotometric or chemiluminiscence flow cell thus reducing the overall volume of the working channel to microlitres while avoiding potential errors due to faulty plumbing or mismatched fittings. The majority of assays developed for Flow Injection format and described in the literature, can be adapted to LAB-ON-VALVE system.
