Fermentation Monitoring
At Line and On Line

Flow Injection and Sequential Injection are  well established techniques for fermentation monitoring. Both nutrients and a variety of fermentation products have been routinely monitored at line or on line.

The advantage of the LAB-ON-VALVE system, operating in Sequential Injection mode, is that it consumes  only around 20 microliters of sample and about the same amount of reagent for an assay. This makes this instrument  compatible with low throughput sampling probes ( such as 19mm Flownamics Instruments in situ probe). Commercially available  reagent kits ( Hach Co and Sigma Co) for  ammonia, glucose, glycerol and iron have been used to develop assay protocols applied for monitoring  at line and on line.

Samples collected, centrifuged and refrigerated for “post fermentation assay” can be analyzed automatically, since FIAlab-on-valve instrument, compatible with most commercially available autosamplers will generate calibration curves and reports automatically using FIAlab software.

Since FIAlab-on-valve system is compact,  it is easily accommodated close to the  fermentor. It has been designed to be in direct contact  with the stream withdrawn by the in situ probe. This allows continuous monitoring as the fermentation is on the way, while the FIAlab-on-valve system is periodically activated and  periodically recalibrated by using a standard analyte solution.

Since LAB-ON-VALVE system is compatible with a wide range of reagent based chemistries, it is realistic to assume that it will find use as a multitasking tool for fermentation research –especially since it is compatible with a small scale experimental fermentors.
