LED SOURCES
The majority of spectrophotometric assays use visible light sources. For this purpose the long lifetime Tungsten halogen lamp is best suited. For UV/VIS  based applications the Deuterium lamp is most versatile, as it offers a very broad range of illumination covering the entire UV-VIS Spectrum. The least expensive alternatives are light emitting diodes (LED) which are now available  for near visible UV and most of VIS region. LED sources have low power consumption and emit light of a narrow bandwidth. This may be an advantage, but also a drawback as it makes use of a reference wavelength difficult or impossible.

Tungsten Halogen Light Sources

The LS-1-LL Tungsten Lamp is a broadband light source (400-2000 nm), with a long life 10,000-hour bulb.  An ideal general purpose source, suitable for both routine and research applications. Widely used   for colorimetric  assays of environmental & agricultural samples for assays such as ammonia, phosphate, and nitrite/nitrate.  Also suitable as excitation light for fluorescence measurements.
Order spare  LS-1-LL-B 10,000-hour replacement bulb for LS-1-LL, This light source is compatible with all FIAlab fiber optic cables.
Deuterium Lamp

The DH-2000 Deuterium Tungsten Halogen Light Source is a powerful combination UV/VIS  source. (215-2000 nm).
Suitable for spectrophotometric and fluorescence based assays. This light source is compatible with all FIAlab fiber optic cables.

Light Emitting Diodes

LED-Lamp – LED based light sources are available between 247 nm and 945 nm.
Multiple LEDs can be combined to construct  a multifunctional light source.
Common combinations include: 270 nm LED with white LED
340 nm LED with white LED
880 nm, 945 nm, and  white LED
LED-lamps are often superior to other light sources for their long life and stable output , but offer a limited room for selecting a reference channel wavelength.

Fiber Optics

All FIAlab fiber optic cables are made of 600 micron quartz core, in a PEEK sheath. There are two types of terminals available.
SMA connectors on each end to fit light sources, detectors and flow cells. The other type has the SMA connector on one end and either a stainless steel sheet or a PEEK sheet on  the “solution” end .
The end in contact with the monitored solution is polished for maximum
transparency and it fits within narrow tolerances into flow cells
and LOV modules.

We offer a wide variety of  fiber optic cables compatible with all our flowcells,  light sources and detection systems. All of our fiber optic cables are UV/VIS compatible and solarization resistant.

The photo shows a fiber terminated with an SMA connector (top).  SMA connectors are utilized for connections to spectrometers, to  any of the above listed light sources, as well as the SMA-Z style flowcells.

The P600-20, P600-20-BIF, and P600-20-TRI optical fibers use SMA connectors on all ends. The FIA-P600 optical fiber uses an SMA connector on one end and PEEK sheathed connector on the other end.

Our most common fibers are listed below.  Custom cables are available, please contact FIAlab for details.
